…to speak of many things, of ships and shoes and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. I was shopping earlier this week at a store and the sign in the shop next door caught my eye. They had several large signs telling of their many talents: screen printing, custom t-shirts, trophies, embroidery, pest extermination, and, of course, photography. Really? All that and photography too? With today’s digital cameras and their on-board computers, along with sophisticated editing software, making a decent looking image is easier than ever. However, just because a screen printing, embroidering, trophy maker/exterminator has a camera, it does not make him a photographer. In fact, just because an image was made with a camera doesn’t even make it a photograph. In this day when there are snapshooters pretending to operate a camera that knows more about photography than the operator, real photographers are becoming a dying breed.

Bokeh–you know, the fuzziness of the background in an image with small depth of field. Not all lenses have as pleasant bokeh as others. What defines good or bad bokeh? A lens with “good” bokeh generally has two characteristics: round and evenly lit circles of confusion. The roundness is a factor of the number and geometry of the aperture blades. A telling measurement of the evenness of the circles is how closely the sagittal and meridional curves track each other. Here is the MTF chart for the Nikon 85mm f/1.4. Notice that the curves track each other fairly closely. Not surprisingly, this lens is well known for its bokeh. Also, keep in mind as you are trying to achieve the shallowest depth of field that most lenses are sharpest within two stops from maximum and minimum apertures. So, if you find your f/1.4 lens is a little soft, shoot at f/2.8 for best overall sharpness.

I understand–you want to take the CD to WalMart and have prints made for a fraction of what the photographer charges. There are at least three reasons the photographer must deliver your prints, and charge what he charges. The first need is quality. Why hire a photographer? Because you appreciate and desire the high quality and artistic beauty of a professional photograph. The quality and artistic processes and do not end when the shutter closes. In fact, most professional photographers spend at least as much time preparing and delivering your prints as preparing and capturing the image. Secondly, you are paying for art. I recently read that the Mona Lisa is valued at around $100,000,000. Not bad for about $10 worth of paint and canvas! If you could take photographs like a professional, you would. However, the professional photographer adds his artistic touches that make a snapshot into a work of art. The art is in the setup and capture of the image, AND the editing and printing of the final artwork. Lastly, this is the photographer’s livelihood. There are many expenses with running any business. Besides, there is something just wrong with using equipment costing thousands of dollars and requiring years of study, and then finishing the process with a 29 cent one-hour print. I am happy to give you an electronic copy of every image you order as an 8×10 print, or larger. However, the copy is suited for showing on the web, and is not to be printed. Keep in mind, the image created by the photographer belongs to the photographer. As with any work of art, it is illegal to modify, copy, print, or do anything else with the image without written permission from the copyright owner. If you enjoy the quality of my art and want me to stay in business, please realize the prices I charge are as reasonable as I can possibly make them. Thanks for reading my post and responding with your comments!

Digital cameras have revolutionized photography. But don’t you wish you could load just one roll of Kodachrome in your Nikon and shoot like old times again? What if I told you that you can load a roll of digital Kodachrome? If you own a recent Nikon DSLR camera, keep reading…

Download the file from my educational website www.cinenosin.com/downloads/Kodak_Kodachrome.NCP.

Rename the file to PICCON01.NCP.

Put your camera’s memory card in your computer and create a directory in root of the memory card /NIKON/CUSTOMPC/.

Copy the renamed file to the new directory.

Put the card back in your camera and turn it on.

Go to the following menu: Shooting Menu -> Manage Picture Control -> Load/save -> Copy to camera.

Select Kodak Kodachrome 2, press OK, find an unused slot and press OK, and press the “+” magnifier button to save it.

Go to menu Set Picture Control -> Kodak Kodachrome 2 and press OK.

Now you are ready capture “those nice bright colors, the greens of summers that make you think all the world’s a sunny day.” Oh yeah, I got a Nikon camera, I love to take a photograph, so mama don’t take my Kodachrome away!
